N2 - In this paper, a simple model is proposed to predict the optimal section of concrete-filled twin steel tubular (CFTST) columns under axial compression. By this model, the optimal sizes of the standard inner and outer steel tubes can be calculated based on the assumption that the bulk modulus of the confined concrete varies with the volume of the concrete. Using this model, the effect of the thickness of the steel tubes can also be taken into account. The main advantages of the model are attributed to its simplicity and its clear physical meaning. When this model is applied to design, the outcome agrees very well with experimental tests and the predictions by existing models.
