Abstract

The Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) is an important property for unsaturated soils. The SWCC expresses the relationship between water content and suction. It can be used to estimate the permeability function and shear strength of unsaturated soil. However, the test duration to obtain the SWCC is very long. Hence, many methods have been developed to estimate the SWCC. To-date, it appears that the most reliable method to estimate the SWCC requires at least one SWCC measurement point. The objective of this paper is to evaluate one such method for soil types ranging from sand to clay. The evaluation showed that the method is reliable for most soils. For the cases where the method gives less reliable estimate of the SWCC, the reasons were investigated and recommendations were provided for the improvement of the method.
