Abstract

This paper describes the testing results of five full scale Circular Hollow Section (CHS) T-joints subjected to axial compression in fire condition. The ultimate strength and failure modes of the joints with three different ratios of brace-to-chord diameter and three levels of isothermal temperatures were investigated. For each specimen, static test was carried out to investigate the load-deflection curve of the joint where ultimate strength could be determined. The failure mode was also captured. The experimental results at elevated temperature condition show that the ultimate strength of CHS T-joints subjected to brace axial compression dramatically reduces as the temperature increases. In addition, elevated temperatures not only reduce the ultimate strength of the joints but also localize the plastification deformation on the chords. The local buckling as well as the ovalisation of the joints was more concentrated around the joint compared to that at ambient condition.
