N2 - Data capacities in optical storage is commonly assumed to be limited by the optical resolution of the readout system, however practically it is the noise present in the system that presents a fundamental limit. Such limits are considered in a new data storage system by employing an information theoretic approach. Due to similarities in the detection system the theory can be extended to other fields. Single molecule experiments are considered as an example.
