Abstract
The vacuum preloading method has been used in a number of countries for soil improvement and land reclamation works. Prefabricated vertical drains are normally used together with the vacuum preloading technique. When a surcharge load large than the vacuum load is requird, a combined vacuum and fill surcharge preloading method is also adopted. The mechanism of the vacuum preloading method is explained by examining the pore water pressure and effective stress changes in both the fill surcharge and vacuum preloading cases. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the applications of the vacuum preloading method and the combined vacuum and fill surcharge preloading method. Discussions on the effective depth of the vacuum preloading method and the methods to estimate the degree of consolidation are also made.
