Abstract

Dubeau & Edgar (M.A. 85M/4120) designed their experiments assuming that the most appropriate end-member stoichiometry for barian magnesian priderite was BaMgTi7O16. This formula, however, is incorrect. The general formula for BaMg hollandites is BaxMgxTi8-xO16 with x 1.33-1.14; assuming, for example, that x = 1.14, the bulk composition of BaMgTi7O16 disproportionates to 0.88(Ba1.14Mg1.14Ti6.86O16) + 0.96TiO2, i.e. yielding rutile.-R.A.H.
