Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the use of core/shell nanoparticles (NP) as electrocatalysts for performing fuel cell reactions. The study investigated the use of these core/shell electrocatalysts, to demonstrate the nanostructural correlation of the electrocatalytic properties for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which are essential for the development of fuel cells. The study demonstrated that the core/shell nanoparticles can be defined as comprising of a core and shell of different materials in close inaction, including inorganic/organic, organic/inorganic, or inorganic/biological combinations. It was also demonstrated that the presence of organic capping shell is essential in each step for controlling the size and monodispersity of the nanoparticles.
