Abstract
In the dynamic landscape of Singapore’s economy, where innovation and adaptation are crucial, the role of design education becomes a key factor in ensuring designers’ relevance and effectiveness. This chapter discusses the shifting landscape of design education in Singapore and the advancements needed for designers to stay relevant in an ever-changing economy. By comparing Singapore’s Design 2025 Masterplan Vision and Ken Friedman’s Eleven Design Challenges model to the current state of design education in Singapore, this chapter discusses talents with interdisciplinary skills and design sensibilities for the wider economy, as well as performance challenges, systemic challenges, and global challenges. It also identifies potential pathways for advancement in the field of design education.
