Abstract

Little research has been done on the integration of exergame-based technology for older adults focusing on integrating both frailty assessment and management. This study aimed to develop an integrated therapy system named “Virtual Integrated Therapy for Active Living (VITAL) Health Box” for both the assessment as well as management of frailty. Specifically, development included two objectives: 1) To identify what elements are useful for old adults & healthcare professionals in an integrated frailty-related technology platform; 2) Based on the technology acceptance model, we investigated factors that influenced the adoption of Exergame-based Frailty Assessment and Management VITAL Health box among community-dwelling older adults. The elements requirements of the VITAL health box were identified through 16 healthcare professionals and 14 older adults who participated in the focus group discussions. Based on the findings, the VITAL health box was developed with the following key features such as (i) increase in-game rewards, (ii) enhance game feedback, and (iii) scoreboard system. Exergame-based technologies show promise as a way of managing the progression of frailty in older adults. This study showed the process of development of a novel virtual integrated therapy system VITAL Health box which was designed for frailty assessment and management. Older adult-centric design focusing on physical performance health outcomes derived from the study gave insightful suggestions for improved usability.
