Abstract

Asia leads the globe in digital censorship, and South and Southeast Asia is one of the world’s foremost laboratories of anti-fake news legislation. This chapter analyzes anti-fake news legislations in the region and looks at whether the laws have been used on critics. Several equate fake news or false information with the interests of the state and government, and the result, not surprisingly, is that these laws have become a political tool in the hands of authoritarian leaders looking for legal and constitutional ways to silence dissent and prevent scrutiny of their actions.
