Abstract
Some recent experimental work in our laboratory at ANU is briefly described. It is principally concerned with systematic descriptions of structures and structural relationships, and similarly-derived crystal defects. There are two main divisions, oxides and sulphides. Within these the following specific topics are considered: crystallographic shear (CS) in reduced rutile; rectangular and pentagonal-column structures in WO3+Nb2O5/Ta2O5 produced by double CS and rotation operations; structure and disorder in the chondrodite and leucophoenicite families of orthosilicates; intermediate, spinel-related "spinelloid" phases I to V, relevant to the olivine-spinel transformation; inverse spinels; non-stoichiometric, modulated "Yb3S4"; the non-commensurate, double-layer sulphides "LaCrS3", cylindrite and franckeite.
