Abstract
Singapore is strategically positioned as a regional hub in Asia for various economic activities including, energy and carbon intensive operations such as oil refining, manufacturing, port operations and a well-planned urban infrastructure. However, Singapore does not have its own fossil-based energy resources and has only very recently started embarking on renewable energy options with energy security, decarbonisation of electricity and energy conservation as the key strategic objectives. Energy transition comprises a carefully executed country-wide process towards sustainability by means of energy efficiency and by deployment of clean energy. The Energy Research Institute @ NTU, Singapore, spearheads research in these domains and recently launched two flagship programmes with the objective of providing a bold vision and impetus for development of innovative solutions that will have significant impact on Singapore's energy transition and green growth while also putting Singapore in a leadership position in developing solutions relevant to the tropical region.
