Abstract

The relationship between water content and void ratio is given by the soil shrinkage curve. Such a curve is important to understand the volume change behavior of soils upon drying and it has a direct influence on other properties of an unsaturated soil such as soil-water characteristic curve and shear strength. However, the shrinkage curve is seldom determined as the volume change may not be uniform and cracks may appear during the test depending on the soil type and the method of determination. Therefore, an estimation of soil shrinkage curve will be necessary especially when time is a constraint. In this paper, several methods that have been proposed to estimate the soil shrinkage curve will be evaluated using data from extant literature.
