Abstract
This study aims to understand the rise of fact-checking groups in Asia through interviews with fact-checkers from seven Asian countries. It finds that fact-checkers strive to establish legitimacy by both aligning and differentiating their practices, functions, and principles from those of mainstream news organizations. This suggests that fact-checking organizations are leveraging both the similarities with, and differences from, traditional journalism to establish legitimacy and exhibit social fitness in the midst of an increasingly skeptical news audience.
