Abstract
In this introductory chapter, we provide a broad survey of shifts in the landscape of education in Singapore and the sociopolitical reasons for these shifts. These shifts have catalysed the push to develop future-ready skills in students which, in turn, have propelled innovations in pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning across and within subject disciplines. The four pedagogical shifts in Singapore can be synthesized in terms of 4 Cs – Constructivist, Critical, Creative, and Cosmopolitan pedagogies – that often occur in overlapping ways. We provide an overview of the chapters in this edited volume that provide empirical examples of these innovative pedagogies in Singapore schools and in teacher education programmes.
