Abstract

In this ionic liquid/salt interaction book chapter, the thermodynamic properties of aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) are being discussed. Ionic liquid/ATPS is a promising technology to be used for pretreatment, purification, and separation, mainly on protein. The applications of ionic liquid/salt ATPS on small organic molecules are the main focus. Besides, the factors such as the type and concentration of inorganic salt, temperature, and pH that influence the two-phase separation in ionic liquid/salt ATPS in each application are investigated. The properties of the ionic liquid are extraordinary as it is low volatility, tunable chemical, and physical properties and most importantly it has high extraction efficiency.
