N2 - As an application of biotechnologies to geotechnical engineering, two types of biogrouts have been developed. The first is calcium based and composed of calcium salt, urease-producing bacteria (UPB), and urea, and the second is iron based and consists of iron salt, UPB, and urea. Studies showed that both biogrouts could be used to reduce the permeability and increase the shear strength of granular soil. Calcium carbonate or ferric hydroxide can be precipitated respectively as a result of enzymatic hydrolysis of urea. The permeability of sand can be reduced by two to three orders of magnitude by using either biogrout when the precipitated metal content (either calcium or iron) was higher than 1.5% by weight. However, at such a metal content, the iron-based biogrout may not be effective for biocementation to increase the shear strength of soil.
