Abstract

The wide range of applications of magnetic materials, especially magnetic nanomaterials, in the field of bioengineering and medicine are discussed. A broad introduction to concepts in magnetism and types of magnetic materials is provided. Factors affecting the magnetic properties and the physical principles underlying the applications of magnetic materials are stated. Examples of useful materials are discussed. Applications such as magnetic separation, drug/radionuclide/gene delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, and magnetic resonance contrast agent are then elucidated. Questions for self-assessment by students are provided.
