Abstract

Magnetic cooling is an energy efficient and environmentally friendly thermal management technology. We report the magnetocaloric properties of low cost, high relative cooling power Fe75-xMnxAl25 (12.5 ≤ x ≤20) alloys with tunable Curie temperatures. A second order magnetic phase transition with negligible magnetic and thermal hysteresis was observed. Fe60Mn15Al25 and Fe57.5M17.5Al25 exhibited high values of relative cooling power i.e. 395 Jkg-1 and 430 Jkg-1 and Curie temperatures near room temperature, making such alloys technologically attractive. The low cost, easy availability and established manufacturing technology make these alloys attractive candidate materials for magnetic cooling applications.
