Abstract

A major consideration for the design of an underground storage facility is the layout and configuration of the caverns. This paper presents the results of the parametric studies performed using Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) to investigate the interaction effects between underground caverns in typical rock formations of Singapore. The factors investigated include spacing between caverns and construction sequences of three caverns located side-by-side. These factors are evaluated in terms of displacements and stresses around the caverns. The distribution of plastic zones is discussed in detail for each case of analysis.
