Abstract
Propulsors with outboard drives (PODs) are propeller propulsion units situated under the hull of a marine vessel. They contain an electric motor which is directly connected to the propeller. With the absence of the gearbox, higher efficiency, lower noise and vibration can be achieved. Presently, the wound rotor synchronous motors dominate a large share of the podded propulsion market due to their high efficiency. In this paper, the design process of a 5-MW salient pole wound field synchronous motor for application in POD marine propulsion is presented. The paper contains preliminary design evaluation to describe motor specifications and the main steps of electromagnetic design. Prediction of motor performances are also presented and discussed.
