Abstract

The aim of this research is to profile secondary school students' motivated strategies for learning using Pintrich and De Groot's Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). The sample of the study consisted of 382 secondary students from Singapore. The students completed the MSLQ, Learning Climate Questionnaire, and Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaires. The results of the cluster analysis found four unique clusters with differing MSLQ profiles. Students with either high or average MSLQ, regardless of anxiety levels, seems to perform better in their academic performance. However, students with very low MSLQ scores performed badly for their tests. Having an autonomy-supportive learning climate and more autonomous regulations may be the keys to enhance students' motivation and learning strategies.
