Abstract
Logistics management is a core course for students majoring in transportation, industrial engineering, and supply chain management. This paper introduces the philosophy and practice on how we teach the students to apply mathematical models to practical problems in logistics management. We first introduce linear programming models, integer programming models, and mixed-integer linear programming models to students in a gradual way within the context of logistics. Then, we introduce the “big-M” method used in advanced optimization models. Finally, we combine optimization models with typical and well-known problems in logistics management courses as an extension. We found that learning to use mathematical models to address problems in logistics helps the students to acquire a systematical understanding of the operations in logistics. It also leads students to analyze and solve problems in a logical and rigorous way.
