Abstract

The feasibility of synthesizing a nickel silicide-base coating on an austenitic stainless steel by laser cladding with Ni, Si and Cr mixed elemental powders was investigated. The powders were melted with minimum dilution to the substrate under direct radiation of laser beams. The laser clad composite coating was found to have very high and uniform hardness within the whole coating. A small decrease in the hardness profile was observed in the region of the fusion bonding zone.
