Abstract

A thermogravimetric investigation of the reaction of pyrite with water vapour has been completed. The reaction occurs in two stages to produce magnetite via pyrrhotite, the effect of water vapour pressure being particularly pronounced in the second stage. The influence of particle size has also been studied, and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy investigations were used to complement the thermogravimetric findings.
