Abstract
To cater for the massive development in transportation infrastructure in China, several innovative soil improvement methods have been developed in recent years. In this paper, three methods that are applicable to the improvement of soft ground, namely the vacuum preloading method, the explosive replacement method and the dynamic consolidation method, are introduced. Case studies are presented to illustrate the applications of each method in road or runway constructions. The principles and techniques related to each method are explained. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed and compared. The limitations of each method are also highlighted.
