Abstract

Ge and Sn (non-transition-metal) catalyzed living radical polymerizations were developed. They are based on the reversible activation of alkyl halide with Ge or Sn radical to form an alkyl radical and a Ge or Sn halide. Low-polydispersity (Mw/Mn ∼ 1.2) polystyrenes with predicted molecular weights were obtained. Results for four Ge and Sn catalysts will be presented along with some kinetic features of those systems. Attractive features of the Ge and Sn catalysts are their high reactivity hence small amounts being required under a mild condition (at 60-80 °C) and high solubility in organic media without ligands. Ge catalysts may also be attractive for their low toxicity.
