Abstract

First the authors raise some objections to special techniques proposed earlier to assure that accurate stress-strain data are obtained from triaxial soil stiffness tests. In reply, it is asserted that internally mounted displacement gages offer a very attractive alternative to using externally mounted gages combined with a range of techniques for minimizing errors in displacement measurement. The electro-level gages are simple to use and installation is quick. Furthermore, their use in commercial soil mechanics testing in the United Kingdom is apparently becoming increasingly widespread. 9 Refs.
