Personal profile

Biography

Dr YEO Boon Wooi Joseph is a senior lecturer in the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Academic Group at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Prior to joining NIE, he has taught in both a government and an independent school, and has since learnt how to engage students of all abilities effectively. Not surprisingly, his research interests are on innovative pedagogies that engage the minds and hearts of mathematics learners, which include the use of an inquiry approach to learning mathematics (e.g. guided-discovery learning, investigation and teaching towards problem solving), ICT and motivation strategies to arouse students’ interest (e.g. catchy maths songs, amusing maths videos, witty comics, intriguing puzzles and games, and problems in real-world contexts).

With his vast experience in teaching and research, Dr Yeo has incorporated many of his teaching ideas and practices in a series of school textbooks called think! Mathematics (previously known as New Syllabus Mathematics), which are used in many secondary schools in Singapore and in other countries. Dr Yeo is also a member of the Editorial Board for The Mathematician Educator, an official journal of the Association of Mathematics Educators, Singapore, and the Chairman of Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) Advisory Council. In 2015, his Cheryl’s birthday puzzle went viral not only in Singapore but also in many other countries in the world.
