Abstract

Non-motorized transport (NMT) such as walking and cycling are recognized as sustainable and efficient alternative travel modes for short range trips. However, most of the prevailing transportation systems are planned and designed based on the principles of motorized vehicle transport against the backdrop of motor transport developments. To improve NMT mobility, NMT priority concept should be integrated in transportation infrastructure design and planning. This study investigates walking and cycling environment in Singapore, and NMT priority measures such as pedestrian priority road crossing and exclusive cycling infrastructures are proposed to improve NMT mobility. To understand the impact of NMT priority measures, the NMT accessibility to mass transit stations is evaluated under different scenarios. The NMT trip time is used as the metric to evaluate NMT accessibility, herein, 5, and 10 minutes NMT trips catchment of mass transit stations are calculated.
